Who we are
The Centre d'Activites Récréatives et Éducatives is a day-centre for physically-disabled adults in the Montréal area. The Centre is located at the Shadd Business Centre at 1000 Old Orchard Avenue. We offer a program of recreational and educational activities to adults over 21 with physical disabilities. Our programs are offered in English, making us one of the very few Centres of our kind in Québec.
Currently, we have 17 clients taking part in our activities. Our staff includes 9 part-time staff members, one full time coordinator and a host of volunteers to assist them. We have been in existence as a non-profit organization for the past 16 years with the help of the English Montréal School Board, SACA and the SOC.
What we do
Presently we offer our clients a wide range of recreational and educational activities. These programs include math, science, arts & crafts, music, current events, baking, yoga & meditation, english grammar, poetry, drama, photography, stopmotion, film making, personal goals, history and culture. We also have outings once a week. Due to our high client-to-staff ratio we are able to offer individual help with activities, which allows our clients to participate to the fullest of their abilities. Our activities are adapted to suit our clients needs, and the programs are ever changing depending on the desires and interests of the participants.
We have a staff with a wide variety of backgrounds and specialties which provides for diverse programs.
More than just recreation
We are able to help our clients contact the necessary resources to help them live full and enriching lives. This help may include adapted equipment, wheelchair repair, and housing information. Our staff is also available to help the clients with individual problems or concerns on a one-to-one basis. On a group level, we are also working with the clients to improve listening, behavioral, communication, and life skills. Our program is one of fun, learning, and growing.
Each day clients are allotted time for one-on-ones with different staff members. During this time clients may work on personal goals or projects, or have time to do individualized entertainment such as go out for walks, check emails and make phone calls.
At C.A.R.E. the staff and clients form a special bond and many friendships that are long lasting. We are a place to learn, to socialize, to communicate and to have fun.
